A stable and non-error XP, not hard as you think !

computer-crash1.jpgI have used windows XP for more than 4 years, so I am not a newbie however I am not a Microsoft specicalist either. I have read many complaints that Gates’ operating system brought many problems, and annoyance to users and they often need third party software such as registry cleaners or system optimizers to make the Windows-PC run better. However, with my experiences, those kinds of software just slow your windows performance. Why ?

I tried many and many optimizer-softwares such as Tune Up, System Mechanic, Tweak Master, …. Actually, they are somehow useful, they could help you touch easily to hidden features of windows without facing comlicated registry keys. The problem is that you wouldn’t how they work ? How they optimize, which files they deleted, which registry keys they fixed. They could mess your windows system easily instead of making your life easier. You could say that “Guy, I backed it up alreadt, no more worry !”, but are you sure that after you restore the back up data, everything will be 100% same ? More than that, those kinds of programs will install some tiny application, called real time watch, in order to help you track your system performance. Little or much, they used some amount of the memory.

So, what is the solution ? For me, I have used the current windows system for more than 2 years without formating or shareware optimizer program, and my old-fashioned HP desktop could work very well. You may not believe, but I did not spend any penny to buy third party software to optimize it. Here are some tips:

- As usual, windows update is always the best thing you should to notice. It could help you patch and fix many security holes.

- CCleaner is really the best free cleaner software. I do not let it touch to my registry, it just has a mission to clean old files. (You should check what it could delete, or it could get rid of your recent address in your browsers, or some of favorite things)

- FreeRAM XP Pro is another great free solution. You will be surprising what it could bring to your windows PC, no crach, no halt, no freeze anymore.

- McAfee Antivirus 10.0 and Personal Firewall 7.0 may be not the best security applications, but they are good enough to keep your PC safe, and more than that they don’t use many resources of the PC. To maximize the safe of your system, you should be very careful to strange and doubtful emails, websites and programs. I did not open any emails which I dont know the senders.

Finally, the most important thing to keep your PC goes well is not the softwares, but is you. You may buy a bundle of expensive software, a extremely powerful desktop, but if you install, set up everything you want, mess it up. Soon after that your windows XP, or even Vista system will go crazy.

I prefer turning off XP’s native firewall - since several family of viruses are aimed directly at it - and installing and using AVG antivirus with built in firewall. Its a free antivirus with an incredible track record. Avast is also good although I get a few more false-positives with it than with AVG. Also - install - AND USE - Mozilla Firefox browser. Keep IE only for site testing and for those pages that totally freak out in firefox (not many these days). With so many IE aimed viruses, and active-x aimed viruses you will really cut down on the virii/spyware/adware you pick up. I really agree about how “optimization software” slows the computer down. I see that regularly in the PCs I service. Also - if you ever have to manually remove a virus, be sure to dump your system restore files, or the virus will remain in resident in them and can reinfect the PC over and over.
